Hardware decoding of the h264 video is only currently available using vdpau 
and an Nvidia card.
(It is coming on ATI card but not there yet)

So,while my personal preference would also be ATI, but I have an Nvidia card 
for Mythtv.

You can either have a ati card and an AMD X2 6000+ running full tilt sounding 
like a jet engine or you can use and Nvidia card with low cpu utilisation.
