On my Windows laptop it takes about 30mins to rip an 8GB DVD as an iso. Even
without encoding it's slow enough to be annoying if you're waiting for it to
finish.

You should give Myth another go. We started using it for the convenience of
not having to switch inputs. Then one day we were watching something and the
quality didn't look that good in Myth (was a little jerky) so we thought
we'd try the standalone player. The standalone player was much worse - not
jerky but less clear and much more washed out. Of course my standalone
player is about 10 years old and doesn't have progressive scan or
anything... but still I was impressed at how good the picture was in Myth
comparatively.
