Then install the packages in the testing repository ; they have been
compiled with debugging information on..

then start mythfrontend.real using gdb as explained here:
http://www.mythtv.org/docs/mythtv-HOWTO-22.html#ss22.2

The testing packages is using a slighly smaller video buffer, but I'm
guessing it doesn't matter for the crash you are seeing
