did you configure lirc properly, so the lirc_imon drivers is loaded ?

in /etc/lirc/hardward.conf I have:
REMOTE_MODULES="lirc_dev lirc_imon"

do a modprobe lirc_dev lirc_imon ; you'll see there.

I'm pretty sure you just haven't configured lirc properly
