Yes, that has fixed the backend problem thanks Stu. Of course now I cannot
access the backend by using remote front ends, but at least I can watch TV.
Given I can connect to the box, but not connect from it, I am guessing maybe
a firewall setting that is blocking everything? But I cannot see any
settings in the Mythbuntu setup for firewalls - can anyone tell me what, if
any, firewall Mythbuntu puts in place and how to configure it?

I would check that your ip in youre backend is still set to loop back on
it's self.
I think it is under the general tab.
