[mythtvnz] help - very poor picture quality

Hi all - I have successfully installed Mythbuntu on a machine with a
GeForce4 440 MX card. Everything is (mostly) working very well. My
main issue at the moment is that whilst the quality of the picture on my
monitor is excellent - the picture quailty on the TV (sitting right next
to it) is **VERY** poor. I'm using an SVideo cable, and the graphics
card is in TwinView mode. Both the CRT and TV are being run at
1024x768. De-Interlacing is OFF. using nVidia binary drivers

There are several aspects to the poor quality:
1) a 'comb-like' effect, like interlacing, however instead of hundreds
of fine horizontal comb teeth as you would expect with an interlacing
effect, there are only about 20 large horizontal teeth across the screen
from top to bottom.
2) a faint (but annoying) diagonal shimmering across the entire screen
3) the TV screen appears to have very low resolution. If i had to guess
- id say 240x160'ish. Fonts on the monitor that are crystal clear
appear to be only 3-4 very large pixels high on the TV.
4) during fast moving scenes, there is a lot of video 'stutter' on the
TV, but absolutely none on the CRT at exactly the same moment.
5) I understand that the TV is not going to be as good as a CRT, but all
TV shows look like the camera-operators were filming with a mobile phone!!

So far i've tried:
1) a new SVideo cable
2) dozens of different modifications to my xorg.conf
3) connected a video camcorder to my TV via SVideo (works perfectly)

Any other suggestions? If necessary, i'll buy another video card - any
suggestions for cheap ones on TradeMe? Also, am i correct in thinking
that DeInterlacing should be OFF as my TV is interlaced?

Cheers
:-)
