Well the good news is a Q6600 CPU is under $400 now, and some systems 
are specced with one for not much more than $1000.

eg: Acer Veriton M460 Quad Core Q6600, 2GB ram, 160GB sata HDD, XP Pro 
3Y Warranty - Mini tower

Add some drives to that and it'd make a nice backend.  Internal 1TB 
sata drives are also below $400 now.
