Hi folks,
Thanks for all your advice.  I have my setup my remote and works great.  
Thanks for pointing out that I did not need to compile lirc from 
source.  My mistakes was
that I did not instruct the kernel to free the serial port correctly.

One minor hiccup: the lirc daemon does not start properly on bootup 
eventhough I have set it to do so.  I am having to manually restart it 
via the command line using sudo /etc/init.d/lirc or something resembling 
this.  Any advise?
