I'm a perl guy, so I'm using psmon to do this.  My /etc/psmon.conf file
has the following in it:

<Process mythbackend>
  SpawnCmd /etc/init.d/mythtv-backend restart
  pidfile /var/run/mythtv/mythbackend.pid
  instances 1
</Process>

And that's it.  I get an email when it is restarted, very handy.  :)
