[mythtvnz] Buying Hardware

For suppliers, when you buy is more critical than where you buy.
Prices often change daily depending on availability, source, quantity,
currency and lead times.
The guy on trademe, may only sell that one item, he may have bought a
box of 100 and therefore scored a quantity discount that he can pass on.
The guys at bioprotech may buy items directly from the supplier as
people order them, therfore they would pay a higher price (probably
higher than what the tradme guy is selling them for).
Some of the others may stock a few of them and got a discount for buying
5 or more.
Someone else may be stocking an item that they bought 6 months ago when
it was at the bleeding edge and therefore much more expensive.
Whenever you ask for a price on something, quantity is the leading
influence, prices go down exponentially with quantity, I'm aware of some
products where it is cheaper to buy 100 than it is to buy 20 in quantity.

What does this mean for consumers?
shop around for EVERYTHING, one supplier may be cheaper on one item but
more expensive for another.
Companies that specialise in specific hardware are more likely to be
purchasing quantities of that specific item and can therefore get
quantity discounts.

Companies that buy one off items for individual orders often have fast
turnaround but prices can change daily and they often aren't the cheapest.
Beware that trademe items may be b-stock, older firmware versions or
parallel imports with no warranty etc.
Items that are old stock or have been superceded are you most value for
money as suppliers are often looking to quit them at cost to avoid
getting stuck with them.

ps, I'm not affiliated with any of these suppliers, or any supplier in
the IT field and the above examples are just that and probably aren't true.

Cheers
Toby
