Ok, thats intersting, mine is home made using parts from dick smith, it 
doesn't really care about distance or alignment, the tape came off a few 
weeks ago and it was facing the opposite direction, but it still kept on 
working by bouncing the signal off the glass. The output power of the 
commercial ones must be quite a bit lower.

mine doesn't have any of the recommended protection circuits, its just 
using the very basic circuit design.
