Hey there folks. Just thought I'd introduce myself instead of lurking as a
recipient only, which I have been for quite a while. (Thanks for the guilt
trip Admin).
My name is Russ and I'm a Kiwi living in Texas USA since 2004 (job bought me
here) and I'll be moving back to NZ in 2008. I''ve been using Mythtv for
about 2.5 years and it is the cornerstone of our home entertainment. The
wife loves it and calls it HER Mythtv (and I usually get appropriately
warned before messing with it or adding hardware/"features").
Quick Specs of my rig:
- Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn with Mythtv 0.20, Mythweb, Mythvideo,
Mythmusic, Mythvarchive etc...
- Silverstone SST-LC03-S case
- 1TB storage (2x 500GB SATA)
- Dual core AMD 3600 Brisbane
- 3 tuners (two terrestrial, one DVB-S)
- Wireless networking, wireless keyboard & mouse
- Near silent - see link below
- Entire DVD collection (most converted to Xvid)
- Entire music collection
- Use Mythtweb to automatically record favorite shows and flag
commercials, and MythtArchive to save the fav's to the DVD library.
- Samba for media around the house.
More details on my Mythtv here which includes a partially completed how-to
for my own reminder: http://nzrussmythlatest.blogspot.com/
Seeing as I'm here for a while longer I'm planning on throwing in an HD
(ATSC) tuner to pick up the local FTA High Def Channels, but will do that
closer to the 42" plasma slush fund being ready (c. September).
A couple of my colleagues are also Kiwi's and have been using the
commercially available TiVo's which they've gotten very use to. They're now
coming to me for some guidance on a Mythtv build to take home to NZ. It
seems their wives are too use to the convenience DVR's provide also - And
Steve, I've been plugging Openmedia to these guys.
Well, that is pretty much where I'm at with my Mythtv. Feel free to check
out my link etc.
Before I go on, I have to say I really appreciate the list and the great
advice you guys provide. The main reason I've been 'lurking on the list' is
too keep up to date on Mythtv things in NZ, and that I have a couple of
concerns in transferring my Mythtv from the US to NZ, which are:
1) EPG guide: I've been really interested in the stability of the NZ EPG
feeds, and thought we had it good here with the zap2it-labs EPG which was
super reliable, very accurate and free. Alas they are stopping their feed
later in the year so the US MythTv community will be back to web scrapes or
something..... It is a real shame there is no free/lowcost legit licensed
equivalent in NZ at the moment. I've been meaning to try a couple of the
approaches (e.g nice feed, and EPG snoop) but haven't got around to it. So
i'll probably get a couple of the feeds at some point, if you're wondering
why a USA IP address is downloading stuff.....
2) Hauppauge PVR-150: I currently have two PVR-150's with big NTSC stickers
on the side of them. Seeing as Linux/Ubuntu loads the firmware to the card
and they work on a PAL composite signal when selecting PAL in the tuner
setup (using my iPod as a PAL composite source), I'm wondering if they work
with a PAL RF source (I have nothing to generate PAL RF source to test). I'd
rather not go out and buy two PAL tuners if there is no point. I'm sure i've
seen NTSC stickers on a couple of NZ builds so if anyone has any advice on
these cards that'd be great. The exact part number and a link to the card is
on my build (above).
Well that's me.
Cheers all,
Russ.
