[mythtvnz] LIRC irsend broken

I have a mythbox that uses irsend to control a telstrabox, this worked 
well under Feisty and lirc ver 0.8.1.
I foolishly upgraded the box to mythbuntu.  irw and lircd work fine, 
irsend no longer works.  My ir sender hardware hasn't been changed.
I have googled and tried lirc 0.83pre but no luck.  After irsend has 
been dmesg has the message "lirc_serial: ignoring spike" with a series 
of numbers after it
Has this happen to anyone else, or am I just unlucky? >:o
