[mythtvnz] Keymapping between Hauppage remote and MythTV

I have a remote that shows up in /dev/input/eventX
The numerical and arrow keys work like a keyboard but most of the rest 
don't.
If I don't want to use LIRC to do the translation, what do I use instead?
setkeycodes comes to mind but it seems to expect a scancode not an event 
code...
I know how to get all the eventcodes for this remote but am clueless on 
how to map them to keys that MythTV uses...
