I'm sorry to say that I think you should have bought the usb dongle.
It acts as a HID, emulating a keyboard. Each remote key is mapped to a
keyboard key, without lirc being needed at all.

I believe Martin might upgrade you for about $6.00 or thereabouts,
plus postage I guess. Its a different computer dongle but the same
remote, so all you need is the dongle. You can borrow mine to try it
out if you like, the machine it is plugged into hasn't really worked
as a frontend as it is underpowered, so there is a window of
opportunity for you to give it a go if desired.
