 >I can plug each individual skystar into the dish and it works fine, 
however, when i run them through the splitter, only one or the other 
will work.

Found the problem in about 5 minutes this morning (after battling it all 
night).
It turns out it was my original Sky LNB which I had feeding the 
skystars, its an older one.
As soon as I swapped the lnb's over so the new one was feeding both the 
skystars, it jumped to life.
Not exactly sure why but its fixed now.
