Hi all,
My name is Nigel Bond, having just joined the list the administrator asked
me to send a 'hello' mail, so here it is.
I am a 38 year old English man and I have been happily living here in
Auckland(Greenhithe) for 2 years.
I am a Java Architect/Team lead and have been since programming Java since
1998(1.0), before that I was programming in Ada(7 years), Fortran 77, BASIC,
Machine code, C, C++, HILO(cant even remember what that looked like),
machine code and other stuff.
I came across MythTV whilst building my house here in Greenhithe, the idea
of a wired house was pretty exiting to me. So I created a server room at
the centre of my house sent TV and internet from it to every room in the
house. Then for good measure I put in provision for surround sound in the
living room (and for some reason the Garage) and sound to each of the other
rooms in the house. I have a very exiting wiring video we filmed after a
weekend of wiring the house.
To date I have(had) the server in place. For ages it had two PVR-350 cards
and an IV-TV card pulling in TV shows onto Myth 0.18 (I think), and getting
mrgeek's (and others) TV feed. At its best I could get the TV off of UHF
sky pipe the picture down to the living room and pipe the sound to the
surround sound system. All this was controlled by an infra red transmit
receive thingy bob. My front room has the TV and five speakers(with no
wires showing anywhere do to the wiring we did). The configuration was hell
but interesting but more frustrating was that my server decided it did was
going to play up, freezing all too often for my wife. Eventually I
de-commissioned it took the cards out and gave the server to the kids(Josh
and Will, 9 and 7 respectively). I have finally worked out that the problem
was infact the power consumption causing the system to over heat.
So now I am ready to try again(on a new box as the kids seem to think the
other one is theirs now), I have downloaded the latest Knopp myth instead of
FC3 but I will not be too surprised if I move over to FC4 which is also
being downloaded. I am also planning to add asterix to my system and get my
phone bills down to a low level.
Anyway I am supposed to be working. Look forward to seeing lots of
interesting stuff from you all.
Thanks
Nigel
