Sadly many CAD programs can produce broken STL files, this is why many 
STL fixers have been written.. (one of the worst is solidworks, which is 
ridiculous considering the cost of the thing)

Modern slicers also now fix broken stl's as the issue was getting out of 
hand.

NB most modern slicers do allow you to re export to STL, so you don't 
have to generate gcode with them for them to be useful.
