I remember Mark asking about step-up converters and I didn't post
details.

Step-up converters with MT3608 chip have very low no-load power
consumption. Approximately 0.2-0.5mW from 3.0-4.0V input. They're good
for lithium single-cell applications.

I've measured approx 23mW (6-8mA) with no load at 3-4V in for FP6298
chips.

Modules with MT3608 are easily available on Aliexpress in at least 2
different shapes (one with a microUSB input). Modules with SX1308 are
equivalent, but come in different module shapes again, which is
sometimes useful. Starting around US$2.50 for a 5-pack.

I'd be interested in hearing suggestions about how to tell
better-quality of those modules apart from the cheapest junk.

Volker
