They use an MP2307, which is very similar but has a fixed frequency of
340kHz (as opposed to variable settable, set to 900kHz). They're all
over Asian supplier sites for similar prices but shipping included. I
have some on order.

The MP1584 not starting up and going into funny mode is a reliability
concern, also the circuit power loss has to be investigating to see if
it just smokes after a few minutes.

The LM2596S sucks 5-10mA just doing absolutely nothing (Iout = 0), but
it will do 3A. Not what I need most times. 150kHz sounds more like 1980s
technology.
