Can anyone advise me of a good source of 1 mm el wire from a free postage or reasonable postage source. As well inverters for short lengths.

Bit of a slow reply...
I built up some kits using Nano's that had to be cheap for a club project a couple of years ago and bought a few of the very cheap ones around the place and wound up going back to the ebay seller I normally get ones with real FTDI's on them at about the $6 USD mark in volumes of 20up.
>From memory the cheap Chinese chipset ones just worked on my windows 8 netbook, did not work at all on the mac or windows XP, and were 50/50 on Debian 7.6. I tried windows 7 in a Virtual box on top of my linux and it magically worked even though plugged directly into a non-virtual win7 the didn't even come up with the 'finding a driver' type messages.
You can however use them via the ICSP connection if you really want a cheap carrier for a ATmega 328, and you don't want to use the USB to re-program it... So if you're making something in volume sufficient to make the saving worthwhile, but not large enough volume to justify fabbing a board with an SMD micro etc the cheap boards could be an option.
Of course I can't vouch for the quality of the other components on any of the cheap Arduino boards and if you want it to be running in 10yrs time I'd suggest spending a few more bucks and getting 'branded' modules/boards or fabing your own.

Hehe, they're never quite sure which colour LEDs to put where, and where each resistor value goes... Soldering can look a bit so so too, but is easy to fix while things still have pins. Cheap way to get a 328 and a PCB for it without having to invest.
Is there a way under Linux to find out thich ftdis are fake?

I've never used any of the nano jobs because I like having the USB header for prototyping, but every time I'm pricing some new boards I look at them. The thing that puts me off is the odd spacing of some of the holes so sticking them in verboard wouldn't be as easy unless you run wires/headers out the top...
Must order a couple next time I'm getting some and have a play, they certainly are dinky-small, and quite a bit cheaper than the nano.

Not linux, but a good microscope, and intersting in a geeky kind of way.

Looks like the fakes are some sort of micro of larger-than-needed micro, so one assumes that FTDI figured out a way to trick them into exposing that.

Oh..
And just looked at the pinout for the pro mini..
AREF is not bought out on them, and I use LM385 voltage references on a lot of the stuff I do with the Nano's so that kinda puts a dent in that idea.
Still, they are dirt cheap and dinky, so might get some when I'm next in ebay spend-up mode. :-)

You can get them cheaper still on ebay, but I've been dealing with TxHang for a few years and spent a lot of money with them and never had an issue... Saving a few more cents is not a priority once things get this cheap really. :-)
And this thread just cost me $11.90 USD. Because I was looking I've just ordered 5 pro minis to add to my somewhat eclectic random collection of Arduino boards and modules. :-)

I was buying some RFM69xx modules at the same time, and yes postage not
included but reasonable and quick.
