Ya, if you're mounting light kit they'd work fine me thinks.
 
If it were anything heavy you'd soon have issues with the load-bearing ability of most timber thin enough to be practical.
 
As it happens I do use them on my router spoilboard for fixtures, they are great for that sort of thing.

Part of the hard work solution for wooden DIY mounting rails might be something like these M6 bushes that Charles brought along on his workbench assistant :
