Go back to basics and check everything.

Check that you have updated the right tv_grab_nz-py file - there might
be more than one on the path. Log in as your mythtv user which runs
mythfilldatabase and do:

which -a tv_grab_nz-py

Check that you can download the epg file - cut and paste the URL from
the tv_grab_nz-py file into a command line and add a wget command on
the front. Do you get a valid file?

I think I have found the problem.I did another search for tv_grab_nz-py and found that the text editor I used seems to have made backup copies of the original files,in both locations, named: tv_grab_nz-py~ .
I deleted these backups and ran mythfilldatabase -v xmltv and got this:

2013-03-16 14:05:54.164031 I Updating source #1 (Freeview) with grabber tv_grab_nz-py~
2013-03-16 14:05:54.264874 E Grabbing XMLTV data using tv_grab_nz-py~ is not supported. You may need to upgrade to the latest version of XMLTV.
I now do not get 'XMLTV:FAILED returned error code 1' but I get: Mythfilldatabase ran,but did not insert any new data in the Guide for 1 of 1 sources. This can indicate a grabber failure.
Paul

For goodness sake Paul how about you delete EVERY instance of tv_grab_nz-py* on your system and redownload it from http://nice.net.nz/scripts/tv_grab_nz-py

Then change the url as suggested earlier in the thread.

Move it to /usr/local/bin and make it executable.

Your mythtv however seems to be set up to use /usr/local/bin/tv_grab_nz-py~ how on earth you you did that I don't know. Don't use the backup file, that's just silly. You will need to fix that in mythtv-setup
