Do not get one of the really cheap Genius wireless keyboards. They
are crap - you miss at least 1 keystroke in 5 or 6, even within a
metre of the receiver.

The one I have is a BTC 9019URF (http://www.btc.com.tw/english/news_15.htm). It works well at about 4m from the receiver though not much further. It's cheap so I don't need to worry about it getting banged around a bit (it gets knocked of the coffee table regularly) and the handles make it so much better for passing around to people. Not sure if they are still obtainable in NZ unfortunately. When I got it there were very few options available for media center setups - most wireless keyboards were designed for desktops and have very limited range. I'm not sure if this is still the case (sounds like it might be from your experience), BT keyboards should be fine at least.
