I'm not using Freeview HD (just poor-man Freeview) but I recently rebuilt my myth box and had no audio. For me to solution was the mixer. For some reason one of the outputs (wave I think) had been muted during the installation.

I resolved this by using alsamixer in terminal to unmute and "crank" all the levels up. It was a nice easy fix for once :-)
__________________________________________________________________
I had this problem early on as well.

I just played around with the options in: Utilities/Setup -> Setup -> General -> Audio. IIRC I had to change the "Audio output device" and "Mixer device" settings to suit. Another issue which clouded my troubleshooting is that the volume output from my sound card is way lower than most other devices in my lounge, so I ended up cranking the amp up a few clicks to be sure. I also used 100% for the two volume sliders in the aformentioned config page).

I also found that I got better results from using Master in the "Mixer controls" setting, rather than PCM.

J

On Wed, Apr 15, 2009 at 9:22 PM, Alastair Bain <bainorama@gmail.com> wrote:
What is required to get sound working for live/recorded tv in MythTv (I'm using Mythbuntu 9.04b).

I'm using a Hauppauge HVR-1700 and can tune/record/watch fine but no sound. If I play recordings back with VLC everything is fine, just not in MythTv directly. Sound for all other media types works in MythTv, so I'm thinking its a decoder issue?
