[mythtvnz] Total system failure: Any suggestions?

This morning I was looking at my system trying to work out how to get
mythfill-database to talk to nz_grab_nz-py and I could not start
mythtv-setup.  It got as far as shutting down the backend and opening
the xterm, then hangs.

I rebooted the system and tried again, the same result.

I purged mythtv-common then reinstalled mythtv.  Same result.

'mythtv-setup' is a shell script (pointing to dash).  Is there a way I
can put that shell script (any shell script) into a debugger and step
through it?  Then I would have a better idea of what is making it hang.
