LiveTV is done the same way as record & watch. It didn't used to be,
but it has been for quite a few versions now. The resulting files are
normally hidden from view and expired after one day. The only real
difference is to do with scheduling - no scheduler can predict when
you change channel.

Another source of problems which could cause a crash are quality of
reception problems. Glitches in the bitstream can crash your player.
Tortise I suggest you check the quality of your signal.
