OK, this appears in the log:

AFD: codec AAC/LATM has 0 channels
AFD Error: Could not find decoder for codec (AAC/LATM), ignoring

Some googling suggests that NZ freeview broadcasts need the frontend
compiled with the --enable-libfaad option.  I guess my debian version
doesn't have it but the mythbuntu version must...  (the libfaad0 library is
installed on both...)

I guess I am going to have to download the source and compile...  ugggh...
