I have thought about some commercial antennas.  I haven't had much luck 
with a client/AP setup with DD-WRT, they are using WDS.
I made some bi-quad heads for 2.4ghz band and optimized them with a 
network analyzer.  SWR came out at around 1.3:1 which was as good as 
comm. specs I saw at the time.  From what I found on google at the time 
@2.4ghz a skytv disk gives around 18db of gain, others may know more.
