Is there a way to flag that updates are in process - and not to update during that period, it seems I am not alone in having been 
caught during such a period?

One way that occurs to me is to check the dates of the source files, and if they are say 3 days old, then its probably ok, except 
that if everyone did that....we'd be no better off!
