Well, with this screen lirc can be a bit confiusing.

lirc won't display anything on a LCD , that's what LCDproc does.

However, lirc provides the drivers to access the LCD.

So you don't need to patch lirc if you are running 8.4a for it to
support your screen; but you do need to install LCDproc and configure
it to use that screen ; which is what I described here:

So install lcdproc ; then download the plugin for your machine (either
64 or 32 bits) , patch the /etc/init.d/LCDd and the configuration file
for lcdproc
