I've tried with two of the samples on the geekzone.co.nz pages.

There are apparently known frame sync issues, which may be the cause of
some of the problems noted below.

720p Freeview|HD sample loop looked okay, but was consistently a slow
framerate against disabling VDPAU. CPU wise, 1-3% with, 60-80% without.

1080i TV3 did not look interlaced, but was consistently at least half
framerate whether VDPAU was on or off. Harder to judge if when it was on
it was more slow (like the 720p clip). CPU wise, 1-2% with, 50-60%
without.

(Given it was half framerate, I'd wager doubling those figures..)
