running dvbscan -o pids produces the follwoing

TV ONE (0x04b0) 19: V 0x00fa A 0x012c (eng) TT 0x03f2 AC3 0x0191 SUB 0x03fc
TV2    (0x04b1) 19: V 0x00fb A 0x012d (eng) TT 0x03f2 AC3 0x0192 SUB 0x0401

So there is a chance you are getting the TT and DVB subtitles with VLC.

What build of VLC are you running, and how good is the AAC support?
