I used to think so, but apparently not.
Laptop batteries like to be completely drained and completely recharged.
If you are relying on the laptop battery as built in UPS, presumably
you mean to keep it plugged in on a constant float charge and only run
off battery during a power cut.

If you do that you may be in for a nasty surprise when the battery
only lasts 5 seconds after the power goes.

Proper UPSes have some variation of lead-acid battery (usually
completely sealed eg gel-cell).
