TV3, in their infinite wisdom, have decided that viewers are too stupid to
decide for themselves what aspect ratio they want to use and are
"pillar-boxing" their 4:3 content (i.e. they add black bars left and right).
This means that it is displayed with the proper aspect ratio if you have a
16:9 TV (whether or not you want it that way), but presumably means that
those with 4:3 TVs have to hope either their TV or their receiver crop 16:9
signals for display.

You can try playing with MythTVs aspect ratio options ('w' key) to see if
you can undo the damage. I haven't found anything I'm completely happy with
though.
