Unfortunatly it seems that the idea of a 16:9 capable 4:3 tv are lost on the
settop box manufacturers, the only way to get the anamorphic 16:9 from a sky
box is to set the tv to widescreen, which then means that you have to change
aspect on the TV yourself.

If you have 4:3 letterbox set on a Sky box, for example, you get 4:3 content
as pillarboxed inside a 16:9 letterbox. Or even worse, ads that are playing
out 4:3 with letterboxing inside the 4:3 area being pillarboxed in a 16:9
area letterboxed.

Maybe TV3 need to learn to flag the streams properly instead of
pillarboxing. How hard is it to send a 4:3 flag on 4:3 content and a
16:9 flag on 16:9 content?

Then it's up to the set top box to do the right thing, like it should be.

Arggh.
