The Power of Open Systems and Open Minds to Improve Aviation Safety

Keith Vinning, PilotAware Ltd

Thursday 24 Jan 2019 19.00 for 19.30

Van Emden Theatre, Edith Morley, University of Reading RG6 6UR

Small, inexpensive but powerful single board computers, like Arduino
and Raspberry Pi, allow ideas to be turned into prototypes and
products at an accelerating pace. The success of such devices is well
known when they are used as an educational device for the young, but
this talk will show how they can also be used very successfully to
meet a real demand at a fraction of the price traditionally expected.
It will explain how initial ideas to produce a homebuilt device to
detect nearby aircraft at a local Flying Club has grown, with the help
of several otherwise disparate communities to be the fastest-growing
Electronic Conspicuity device in Europe over the last 3 years.

It will also show how this would not have been possible without
individual and collective passion to engage and deliver at the
community level, and it will also demonstrate the tangible benefits of
sharing a lifetime's knowledge with the community can be fantastically
rewarding and very worthwhile.

This event is free of charge and open to all: refreshments at 19.00,
lecture at 19:30. Contact: Prof Richard Mitchell -
