The Evolution of TV Distribution

Justin Gupta, Google UK & Ireland

Thursday 25 Oct 2018 19.00 for 19.30

Since the launch of analogue TV in the UK in 1936 , we've seen several
technical developments: colour TV in 1967, satellite and cable
bringing multi-channel TV in the 80s and the shift to digital
distribution in the late 90s.

Over the last decade, the Internet has brought a revolution in the
availability of so called 'Over The Top' catch-up and on-demand
services, resulting in a modest decline in linear viewing. Now, with
superfast broadband availability at 95%, the industry is looking at
how IP will impact the future of TV distribution.

As a TV enthusiast, an Operations Engineer at the BBC and, more
recently, in IT Operations and Business Development roles at Google
focused on Broadcast, I've observed first hand how every change in TV
distribution has driven changes in business models and consumer
behaviour. I now represent Google at industry bodies such as the
Digital Television Group, discussing Internet and TV convergence.

In this talk, we'll look at past technical developments in TV
distribution, the current hybrid situation and how we may be on a
glide-path towards an IP-only future; what it will take to get there
and what the likely implications will be for consumers and the
industry.

This event is free of charge and open to all, with refreshments at
19.00, lecture at 19:30. Contact: Prof Richard Mitchell -
