The potential of home automation and its struggles

Philipp Schuster, Loxone UK Ltd

Thursday 23 January 2014 19.00 for 19.30

Palmer Building, University of Reading RG6 6UR

Home Automation has long been the domain of the rich; seen as fancy, frivolous and
showy. However, with strict EU directives on carbon emissions, rising energy prices and
the common use of smartphones and tablets, the idea of living in a ‘Smart Home’ becomes
less of a fanciful ‘Jetsons-esque’ notion and more of a natural technological progression.

Following an overview of the Home Automation industry and the seemingly endless uses,
this talk will explore the multitude of available standards and current technological
challenges to explain the struggles that have held this industry back, before concluding
with the demonstration of a device that has the potential to resolve these challenges: The
Miniserver.

This event is free of charge and open to all, with refreshments at 19.00.
