From Science to Archaeology: A Dual Perspective

Dr Gillian Walker and Dr Anna Boozer, University of Reading

Thursday 23 February 2012 19.00 for 19.30

Gillian will present developmental work on the use of Terahertz
Imaging to generate sub- surface images of mural paintings that have
been plastered over, including results from a recent measurement
campaign to the Archaeological site Çatalhöyük, in Turkey.

Anna will discuss how research advances in Archaeology are made
through the integration of scientific technique and engineering
principle – for example those being pioneered in Terahertz Imaging –
and how these influence her own research. She will present her vision
for the future contributions of science and engineering to the
understanding and conservation of archaeology, as well as the
integration of scientific and social perspectives on the past.

The presentation will conclude with thoughts from both the Engineer
and the Archaeologist about the research environment necessary to
integrate emerging technologies into common archaeological practice.

This event is free of charge and open to all, with refreshments at 19.00.
