Radar is the only sensor able to provide high resolution imaging at long
ranges in all weather, day or night. In particular, Synthetic Aperture
Radar (SAR) systems on Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAVs) can achieve
images with spatial resolutions of better than 10 cm for battlefield
surveillance at ranges of several km, whilst space-based earth-resource
satellite radars can image the earth with resolutions of a few meters fro=
m
ranges of around 800 km. This lecture will introduce the principles of
SAR, illustrate the results achieved with real systems and discuss the
wide range of civil and military applications. The concepts behind
bistatic SAR, interferometric SAR (able to measure height variations in
a scene to accuracies of a few cm) and Inverse SAR (used to image
moving objects) will be covered. To achieve accurate focussed images,
the practical implementation of airborne SAR systems places unique
demands on the measurement and correction of platform motion, and
motion compensation using inertial sensors and signal processing
autofocus techniques will be discussed. The lecture will conclude with
thoughts on possible future developments, particularly very lightweight
radars for UAV applications.
