> Synopsis
>
> The growth of traffic carried by the Short Message Service (SMS) has
> been slowing recently and has shown signs of reaching a plateau within the
> next year or two. Network Operators have recognised the need to stimulate
> the growth in messaging services. This has resulted in the development of
> the Enhanced Messaging Service (EMS) and the Multimedia Messaging Service
> (MMS) by the 3GPP standards body. MMS defines how mobile devices can
> communicate using a wide range of messaging types already used on the
> Internet. This includes combinations of images, audio and video clips
> etc. MMS is widely predicted to be the most important service for third
> generation mobile networks. It will also be implemented on current GSM
> networks. Ian will describe how the messaging systems work and what
> effects they will have on our use of mobile technology.
