<DIV>Many members of the Society have told me that they object strongly to the
permanent closure of the Mill Lane highway from Berry Hill to the Bath
Road.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>In the four Berkeley Homes Planning Applications which have been submitted
to the South Bucks District Council, it is a key proposal that Mill Lane will be
closed at the bridge over the Jubilee River. </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>The various objections made by members are :</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>+ It is an ancient highway that has been in continuance
use by Taplow Village and Riverside residents, and by neighbouring Maidenhead
residents, in the 1900/2000 ‘motor vehicle’ century years and for the several
centuries before. </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>+ It provides a safe, quick and convenient way to and
from St Nicolas Parish Church on Sunday, St Nicolas School daily Monday to
Friday, and Maidenhead shops and library every day.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>+ There have been no recorded traffic incidents of
significant consequence on Mill Lane or at its junctions with the Bath Road or
Berry Hill during the sixty years of its use by HGVs and Container Lorries
sharing the route with private cars. </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>+ There is no evidence of public demand for the closure
nor are there obvious or published reasons for it being proposed.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>+ The closure will bring serious delays at the Bath
Road/Berry Hill traffic-light junction.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>+ It indicates the prospect of Mill Lane becoming a gated
community isolated and no longer a part of the Village or Riverside
communities.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>+ A Public Enquiry should be held before the closure of a
Public Highway.</DIV>
