Rik "'m constructing a simple chart, to explain the choice of O/S we =
make=20
for different situations:"
Jim "Yes, someone can take the current BSD and produce a closed version,
which cannot be done with Linux, but frankly who cares? It won't make =
any
difference to the world, who would just ignore the closed version."
Thank you for the chart. I think it is good to stretch the mind, and be
open to possibilities.
One of the ways we do this is by comparrison, to see where we can use
something as a tool, or to make our productive work faster, more secure, =
or
else, choose,do we sacrifice security for ease of use.
In the hort /ag world in which I am involved, everyday, more and more
reliance is placed on computer record keeping, ecommerce and smart
management.
As nz is increasingly involved in 'boutique" products and markets, the =
need
for secure records, and systems to protect R&D research, patents etc
increases.
In the next few weeks I am recording over18,000 bits of data, of
commercially sensitive information. Time is precious, but so is the =
data.
I think it will be constructive for businesses in the future to assess =
how,
why etc they choose the computer tools they do. Most people simply use
windows because they are not aware there are any alternatives.
FreeBSD, Gnu/linux etc need not be the sole plaything of interested =
users,
but active useful tools I think.
So yes, I believe that choices, will make a difference.
Its good to have a forum like GNUZ to explore these possibilities.
Thanks for a very informative evening all. It was much apreciated.
