I think that originally OS programmers and teams invested in a
product/service.. a concept  allowing for freedom of open source code.
 This in turn implied that the Dividend" ie the gains from the =
investment of
time, effort, intellectual property etc, was to be shared (divided) by =
the
shareholders ie the global community. The shareholders  (us) in turn can
expect that we receive our dividend as of right in perpetuity. Unless we
sell out,  we can expect the original investment - the object/concept- =
to
remain intact, and indeed, like any investment expectation, to grow!
 When the investment is good, it is worth guarding!
