I think you need to build the FW yourself IIRC, but it has been years 
since I did this.  I'm sure you are capable and people here in the forum 
can help guide you.  If you really get stuck I can dig up the hex file 
on my old hard drive and give it to you, but that defeats the trust of 
building it yourself.

Regarding the programmer device, if you don't want to go through the 
hassle of having boards fabbed and assembled you can do what I did.

I built a programmer beginning with a Mikroe StartUSB for AVR board as a 
base, which allows access to all the at90usb162 pins via breakout to 
header pins, and put the rest on a breadboard.  The board is minimal and 
open source-ish so I wasn't too worried about backdoors.  Just follow 
the programmer schematic and add the necessary components.  It's ugly 
but it works.
