Please can someone reply to let me know this reaches the list.</p><p class="MsoNormal"><br></p><p class="MsoNormal">Anyways, regarding Reel to Reel tapes: </p><p class="MsoNormal">Do you want to use one or display one?</p><p class="MsoNormal">If just for display: look for something cool looking, clean it, if the reels rotate, even better, that's it. </p><p class="MsoNormal">If you want to use it:</p><p class="MsoNormal">- try to get at least 2 similar ones to get spares<br></p><p class="MsoNormal">- the heads might be worn</p><p class="MsoNormal">- the motors might be worn </p><p class="MsoNormal">- the belts will be gone or worn (!)</p><p class="MsoNormal">- the pinch roller may be hard as a rock</p><p class="MsoNormal">- the whole mechanics will need an overhaul</p><p class="MsoNormal">- depending on the age of the electronics, your electrolytic capacitors will be gone and/or leaked, meaning, you will have to replace them. Yes, no kidding.</p><p class="MsoNormal">- and, of course, everything needs to be proper adjusted (head azimuth, speed,... you get the picture)</p><p class="MsoNormal"><br></p><p class="MsoNormal">I have a very good friend in Germany doing this with professional reel-to-reel tape recorders like Revox, he is even asked for his service from museums and collectors outside Germany. He surely will be happy to help with advice. </p><p class="MsoNormal">I will do this later for my old Philips recorders, but right now the house and renovations are more important :-(</p><p class="MsoNormal"><br></p><p class="MsoNormal">Regarding tapes: I haven not seen/heard of mold, but what happens, is, that over time the binder (binding together the ferric particles and the polyester tape) is disintegrating and becoming a smeary mess. You can bake tapes, but that is - eh laborious and risky. This bring back memories!!<br>
<br>
The thing to watch out for with tapes and floppy disks is bacteria growth<br>
(That is what I all it) on the heads and on the parts of tape exposed to he<br>
air. I've damaged a number of floppies before I realized what was happening.<br>
It is quite hard growth but meths on a clean cloth does the trick. My guess it<br>
is similar to the fungi that grows inside on old camera zoom lenses<br>
