<p>FWIW we had one in the wall in the toilet, we both thought we
were hearing things, but no sure enough.</p>
<p>I had to remove the switch and a tube on the vacuum cleaner to
get in and clean it up.</p>
<p>He was coming down the power cable and obviously found it quiet
and peaceful in there.</p>

Put one in that ceiling area and if they're hungry the mice will find it, and you will see the evidence.
A side effect of them eating it is they get really thirsty so head outside looking for water so no smelly carcasses in the roof space.
If they do show signs of eating it, once they're gone, keep a clean cake there as you can then check regularly to see if any more have shown up.
I have one sitting just inside my container as an early warning in case it becomes not rodent proof.

Something seems to have taken up residence between the ceiling of
downstairs and the floor upstairs. No idea what it is finding to eat (I
hate to think - cables, pipes etc) but it's getting very irritating at 3
in the morning (we use a downstairs bedroom). Seems to be a run between
the outside wall and first joist so hopefully well sealed in.
I've tried a trap in the single story roof area next to the run but no
takers. Mouse droppings evident but they could be 10 years old ;(
Does anyone have an idea that would magic it (them) away?
