<p>I have in the recent past been programming them in C using the Arduino Addon as per https://learn.sparkfun.com/tutorials/esp8266-thing-hookup-guide/installing-the-esp8266-arduino-addon</p>
<p>For me the problem was finding the jumper settings that allowed the board to accept and then boot the firmware, I had to pull one DIO pin high for the 'sketch' to run.</p>
