These are designed for development and can be rooted without any software hacks. You just need to hold a special key combination when powering up the device. They are more expensive than the cheap Chinese phones though. I have a Galaxy Nexus that is a couple of years old now and I have found it very good. Also, you just get 'vanilla' android without any manufacturer specific crapware. As the reference android hardware they are also well supported by apps.

Thanks Richard, I'm in.

My interest is in two areas:
1) Control other things in the house with the android device.
2) Having a pocket computer and general-purpose communication device.

Because of 2) high standards data protection are mandatory and having a
spy in my pocket that records everything I do and sends it off to
everywhere is plain not acceptable.

It appears data protection is not achievable without root access to the
android device, because google is protecting the data theft for the
benefit of the ad mafia.
I have no hesitations about replacing the whole OS either, having seen
just how sh*tty default android is. Unfortunately there are no
replacement options for cheap Chinese phones like THL available.
Paranioa here is good practice.

If it was just for 1) and the android device had no Internet connection
things would be much easier of course.

Ditto.
Sorry for late reply. So far there don't seem to be a lot of takers, but
I am interested regardless of size. Perhaps it needs 2 people to start
and to go from there.

The tinkerdroids? Sorry, I never have any energy for names.
